City Sprouts Children’s Garden: Produce and the Market

Posted in Events on May 14th, 2012 by Holly — Be the first to comment!

On Saturday, May 26 from 10 to 11:30 am, children and families of all ages are invited to attend a City Sprouts Children’s Garden event. Children will tend to the vegetable garden and even get to harvest some! We’ll taste different types of produce to compare “yum” quality. We will also learn about how produce travels to market and how to be savvy about food advertising.

City Sprouts is the oldest community garden in Omaha and is located on the west side of 40th Street, just north of Seward St. We welcome children and families from all over Omaha. This event is completely free and snacks will be provided.

Please contact Kaitlin Hamilton at khamilton4@mccneb.edu or 402-559-9317 for questions or in case of inclement weather.

On Saturday, April 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, children and families of all ages are invited to attend the spring kick-off of the City Sprouts Children’s Garden. Children are invited to plant vegetables, make mosaic stepping-stones, and paint garden markers. While space remains, children may also claim their very own City Sprouts garden plot. The kick-off and all its activities are completely free, and a part of Global Youth Service Day.

The garden kick-off is held in conjunction with the Orchard Hill potluck, a celebration held after the neighborhood Earth Day clean-up. However, both City Sprouts and Orchard Hill welcome families from all over Omaha. Bring your children and neighbors!

City Sprouts is the oldest community garden in Omaha and is located on the west side of 40th Street, just north of Seward St. At its heart, City Sprouts cultivates community through gardening. We promote sustainable local food systems, neighborhood health and strength, and community economic viability. City Sprouts is also a great place to have fun and get dirty.

Progress as Promised

Due to renovations and a necessary end-of-season cleaning period, the Sprouts House will be closed starting November 1.

We may schedule a few open work days during the month, but we will not host any workshops or community potlucks until our work is finished. This includes worm classes and children’s programs, which will be delayed until December. Also coming post-cleanup is a series of OPPD Energy Efficiency workshops.

Also, all City Sproutsers are invited to help put the garden to bed for winter on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10 am-2 pm. If you have a garden bed, please come help clean up the site! If you have winter crops growing that you want to maintain past Nov. 5, contact Jeanine or leave a message on the house phone. All other plants are fair game for volunteers to clean out!
