Sprouts House
Location: 4002 Seward Street, Omaha, NE 68111
History: In January 2005, a generous donor gave City Sprouts a building next door to City Sprouts. This building–the Sprouts House Education Center–is a three-story residence built in 1910. It has excellent space for office, meetings, education, social events, storage.
Basic Renovations: The first floor of the house is currently usable for meetings and social events. Upstairs, we now have a functional apartment, and we are establishing a new office space. The house is an ongoing project as we seek to find the best ways for the house to support the garden. Possible future developments are tool and equipment storage, cool storage for food, space for sprouting seeds, organized seed storage, and so on.
Sustainable Design: In the long run, we would like the house to function as a green or sustainable building — with natural solar lighting and heating, rain and gray-water collection systems, energy conservation, use of local materials, efficient use of space, and so on.
Thank You To: We have received help in fixing up the house from a variety of sources. The Omaha Metro Builders Association built a wheelchair access ramp in the back. John Ems and Carl Harts donated some of their labor in fixing up the soffets, basic repairs, and bathrooms. Volunteers in Service Learning from UNO and from UNO’s Goodrich Program have cleaned, painted, repaired walls, and so on. Stuart Bernstein in UNL’s Construction Management program has supervised some of the most important renovations. Michael Carroll has provided much of the planning and supervision of UNO students studying in the Goodrich Program. UNL Architecture professor William Borner has supervised students working on exterior design and sustainable neighborhood plans. Other individuals have made contributions ranging from money gifts to alert assessments of what is needed.
House Use Requests: If you are interesting in using this space for a class or event, you must fill out a Property Use Request form. These forms are currently available at the Sprouts House. Please submit requests at least three weeks before the proposed event!

Hello! I am a teacher at St. Margaret Mary School and was trying to find some information about how to start a garden at our school. Could you give me some helpful hints as to what supplies or items we will need, please. We wouldn’t start until the spring most likely!
Thanks so much,
Erin Beninato
Hello, Erin! I just noticed your comment, as it is in a section of the website I don’t access regularly. I will contact you directly to discuss your project.
Thanks!

Hi,
I was told by someone that it might be possible to have a meeting here. I wondered how big the meeting room is and what the rental fee would be. I am interested in teaching a class about natural essential oils. Thanks, Michelle
We would like to a create a permanent community garden on our land in the 90th and Maple area (we have almost three quarters of an acre for use, plus an apple, pear, and a new cherry tree). Everything seems to grow fantastically (my husband had 12-foot sunflowers for a number of years), and we have tons of arable space for a garden and/or urban farm.
We are passionate about being green, and are happy to share what we have with the community. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to start. I moved here a couple of years ago, and don’t know many people.
Any help or ideas are appreciated – it’s almost time to start growing!
Thanks,
V
We have a reservation request form for anyone who is interested in using our house for meetings or events. I can e-mail you a copy, and you can send the completed form back to me. The requests are currently approved at our monthly board meetings, so make sure to submit your request with plenty of lead time!
