growing gardeners workshops
The Growing Gardeners Workshop Series is a collaboration between City Sprouts and The Big Garden. We work together to offer four seasons of hands-on workshops that feature skills and techniques for every gardener and urban farmer: growing, cooking, preserving and eating healthy local food. All workshops are free and open to all ages.
Our workshops are broken up into three main tracks: Urban Ag School, Herbal Medicine Cabinet, and Culinary Workshops. We also have smaller workshops attached to various community events that we have throughout the year. Check out all of our workshop offerings on our Growing Gardeners website.
We love having guest teachers from our community lead workshops! Are you knowledgable about a subject that you'd like to share in a workshop? Reach out to our Education Manager and explain what skills you'd like to share.

Tentative Schedule
9:00 AM - 9:10 AM - Check In + Coffee
9:10 AM - 10:00 AM - NRCS Soil Health Presentation
The USDA/NRCS in Nebraska will present an update on special initiatives hosted by Nebraska NRCS for Soil Health in Urban Agriculture and Small-Scale Farming and help explain how NRCS can partner with you to improve your land. Understanding how soil health can positively change with management is an important step in understanding the various measurements of success and how healthy soil reduces risk. NRCS Nebraska has partnered with City Sprouts and other Conservation Partners to advance the understanding of soil health management in every Nebraska Farming Operation. Aaron Hird will conduct live soil health demonstrations to showcase the differences improved soil properties make when your soil is responding to disturbance and weather. NRCS representatives will also provide information on USDA opportunities and resources for all Nebraskans including Beginning Farmers, Veterans, Urban Ag and Small-Scale Farms!
10:00 AM - 10:50 AM - 4th Street Farm + Field Trial Tour
Aaron French, along with other members of the farm team, will lead attendees on a tour of the 4th Street Farm. City Sprouts' 4th Street Farm is a ~2 acre diversified vegetable farm located in Omaha's Sherman neighborhood. The site is managed by City Sprouts staff with the help of 19 summer interns. In 2022, its first year under production, over 10,000 lbs of produce was harvested from the site. The tour will explore the conservation practices in use on the farm (e.g., biodegradable mulch, crop rotation, biochar, conservation tillage) and include disscussion of what steps growers can take to implement similar practices in their production systems.

11:00 AM - 11:50 AM - Nash Leef (Salt Slope Farmers' Cooperative) A Producer's Guide to Biochar
Biochar production and use has been increasing rapidly across the US and Europe, but it is a complex material that can be difficult to access in the Heartland. This session will seek to address the most important information that producers need to incorporate biochar into their operation - from production to soil and every use in between.

12:30 PM - 1:00 PM - Intern Field Tour
1:00 PM - 1:50 PM - NRCS Conservation Practice Presentation (TBA)
