growing gardeners workshops

The Growing Gardeners Workshop Series is a collaboration between City Sprouts and The Big Garden. We work together to offer four seasons of hands-on workshops that feature skills and techniques for every gardener and urban farmer: growing, cooking, preserving and eating healthy local food. All workshops are low cost and open to all ages. Sponsorship opportunities are available for those who are unable to pay.

4 Types of Workshops

Our workshops are broken up into four main tracks: Urban Ag School, Herbal Medicine Cabinet, Culinary & Nutrition, and Lifestyle & Community. We also have smaller workshops attached to the various community events we have throughout the year. Check out all of our workshop offerings on our Growing Gardeners website.

Guest Teachers

We love having guest teachers from our community lead workshops! Are you knowledgable about a subject that you'd like to share in a workshop? Reach out to our Education Manager and explain what skills you'd like to share.

about urban ag school

Urban Ag School is Omaha's first low-cost and in-depth series of classes that aims to equip people with all the basic skills they need to grow their own food. Urban Ag School is for everyone who has a strong desire and commitment to learning more about growing your own food. You don't need to be a current gardener and you don't need to have special skills or knowledge to attend. Start where you are, and we will work with you to increase your skills and knowledge base.

How do I join the Urban Ag School?

Registration for all workshops is available at

annual Seed School

In 2019, instructors Alex O'Hanlon and Cait Caughey started an Annual Seed School as part of the Urban Ag School. This free, 2-day intensive class teaches participants the history of seed saving, how to grow for seed, trait selection, and so much more. Curriculum from Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance is used as the basis of the workshop.

Our Herbal Medicine Cabinet track teaches you the basics of various herbal medicinal remedies and how to create your own. Some of the classes include:

  • Fire Cider

  • Canning Elderberry Syrup

  • Fruit & Herbal Vinegars

  • Tinctures & Syrups

  • Infusions & Salves

  • Winter Herbal First Aid
