City Sprouts Community Engagement Coordinator Shannon Gennardo was interviewed by the Omaha World-Herald about backyard chickens. A recent outbreak of salmonella has prompted concerns about chickens in the city. Shannon assured the public that common sense protections, like avoiding kissing and cuddling chickens, hand washing after handling chickens and eggs, changing shoes after leaving the coop, and wearing a mask while cleaning the coop can protect backyard chicken keepers from getting sick. Nebraska has had 17 cases of salmonella this year, it has not been reported how many of these cases are related to the practice of backyard chicken keeping.
